How We Recommend Gear

Gear methodology

The best gear depends on the grower, not the product page.

Eastern evaluates equipment around the job it needs to do: tray workflow, shelf geometry, cleaning, durability, recurring cost and how easy the system is to repeat.

Fresh microgreens arranged with small gardening tools

Use case first

A countertop grower, four-shelf hobby rack and small production room should not receive the same recommendation.

Total workflow

We look beyond one specification to cleaning, storage, drainage, mounting, power, replacement parts and how the product fits with the rest of the setup.

Value over hype

Higher price is not automatically better. We care about whether an upgrade solves a meaningful problem for the intended grower.

What we look at for trays

Depth, rigidity, drainage layout, nesting fit, cleaning, durability and whether a tray remains manageable when loaded with wet media.

What we look at for lights

Coverage across the tray, mounting options, shelf clearance, heat, power draw, timer compatibility and whether the fixture geometry makes sense for a rack.

What we look at for seeds and growing media

Crop suitability, package size, storage, consistency, recurring cost, mess, handling and whether the product adds complexity without a clear benefit.

How affiliate links fit

Eastern may earn a commission from qualifying purchases in the future. The commission does not change the price paid by the reader and does not guarantee a positive recommendation. Affiliate links will be disclosed where appropriate.

Bottom line: we would rather recommend fewer products with a clear reason than publish endless “best of” lists.
