How to Prevent Mold in Microgreens

Mold prevention is rarely one trick. The recurring pattern is excess moisture plus a dense crop plus enough time in stagnant conditions for a problem to spread.

1. Keep media moist, not saturated

University of Maryland Extension recommends keeping growing media moist but not saturated. Penn State similarly advises avoiding excess moisture and allowing drainage to reduce mold development.

2. Bottom-water once roots are established

Moving water into the root zone instead of repeatedly wetting the canopy reduces unnecessary leaf and stem moisture.

3. Maintain gentle airflow

A nearby fan can keep air moving through a dense canopy. The goal is circulation across the growing area—not a high-speed fan drying one side of one tray.

4. Avoid extreme seed density

More seed is not always more yield. Penn State notes that seeding rate needs to balance production with plant stretching and disease. Crowding can trap moisture and reduce airflow at the tray surface.

5. Clean trays and tools between crops

Clean away visible material first, then sanitize food-contact equipment using an appropriate labeled product. A dirty tray cannot be made reliably sanitary by spraying over organic residue.

6. Watch the room, not only the tray

High room humidity, poor air exchange and condensation can create problems even when the individual watering routine seems reasonable. As tray count increases, environmental control becomes more important.

7. Check seed and water sources

Not every mold or disease problem begins with watering. Seed, water and growing media can introduce contamination or disease pressure. Use reputable sources and clean water.
