Kale is a forgiving small-seeded brassica and a strong choice for growers who want an easy crop with a mild flavor and attractive green canopy.
Start with untreated microgreen seed
Use high-quality, untreated seed intended for edible sprouts or microgreens. Kale seed is small and generally does not need soaking before sowing.
Sow evenly on moist media
Pre-moisten and level the growing medium, then distribute seed evenly across the surface. Avoid heavy piles; uniform spacing makes moisture and airflow easier to manage.
Cover for germination
Use a lid or second tray to retain moisture during early germination. Keep the medium moist rather than saturated and uncover once seedlings are established and ready for light.
Move into even light
Kale greens quickly under a bright window or grow light. Even overhead coverage helps prevent leaning and thin stems.
Bottom-water after roots establish
Add water beneath the drainage tray so the root zone can wick moisture upward without repeatedly wetting the canopy.
Harvest young and tender
Harvest above the media with clean scissors when the cotyledons are open and the crop has the size and flavor you prefer. Many growers harvest brassica microgreens in roughly one to two weeks, depending on conditions.
