How to Bottom-Water Microgreens Without Soaking the Tray

Bottom watering is exactly what it sounds like: instead of pouring water over the seedlings, you add water beneath the growing tray and let the medium absorb it through drainage holes.

Why growers bottom-water

  • Keeps most water off the leaves and stems.
  • Reduces the chance of disturbing densely sown seedlings.
  • Encourages roots to use moisture deeper in the tray.
  • Makes watering more repeatable when trays are nested.

When to start

Very early germination may still require surface moisture because the root system has not reached far into the growing medium. Once roots are established and the drainage layer can wick water upward, bottom watering becomes more practical.

A simple method

  1. Lift or separate the growing tray from the solid lower tray.
  2. Add a modest amount of water to the lower tray.
  3. Set the growing tray back into place.
  4. Give the medium time to absorb the water.
  5. Check whether the tray feels evenly moist rather than saturated.
  6. Remove standing excess if the medium has absorbed what it needs and water remains pooled.

How much water?

There is no universal volume that works for every tray. Crop size, tray depth, growing medium, room temperature, airflow and plant age all change water demand. Learn the weight and feel of your own tray rather than following one number blindly.

Signs you may be overwatering

  • The medium stays saturated for long periods.
  • Water remains pooled beneath the tray.
  • The canopy stays wet or clammy.
  • You repeatedly see mold pressure or collapsing seedlings.

Signs the tray may be too dry

  • The tray becomes very light quickly.
  • Edges dry before the center.
  • Seedlings wilt between waterings.
  • The growing medium pulls away from tray edges.

University of Maryland Extension recommends keeping the growing medium moist but not saturated and specifically lists bottom watering as an option once seedlings are established.
