Do Microgreens Need Grow Lights? Windowsill vs. LED

You can grow microgreens with natural light in some homes, but “can” and “consistently” are different questions. A bright windowsill may be enough for a tray or two. Grow lights become more useful when you want even growth, predictable timing, multiple shelves or year-round consistency.

When a bright window may be enough

  • You grow one or two trays for home use.
  • The window receives strong, useful light for much of the day.
  • You can rotate trays if seedlings lean toward the window.
  • You are comfortable with seasonal changes in growth.

Why growers move to LEDs

A grow light makes the light source controllable. You can set the schedule, place the fixture over the whole tray and repeat the same arrangement on multiple shelves. That matters more as you move from casual growing toward repeatable results.

University of Maryland Extension notes that fluorescent or LED grow lights can supplement or replace sunlight for microgreens and uses about 16 hours of total daily light exposure as a practical reference. Fixture distance depends on light intensity, so there is no single height that works for every light.

Signs your crop may want more light

  • Seedlings stretch and become unusually tall or weak.
  • The canopy leans strongly toward one side.
  • Growth is noticeably stronger near the window than at the back of the tray.
  • Color develops unevenly across the tray.

What matters when comparing grow lights

  • Coverage: can the fixture light the whole tray evenly?
  • Mounting: can it be placed safely at the right height for your shelf?
  • Heat: does the fixture change the temperature around the canopy?
  • Power: what will a multi-shelf setup cost to operate?
  • Form factor: bars, shop lights and panels fit racks differently.
  • Timer compatibility: repeatable schedules are easier with automation.

Our rule of thumb

Use the simplest light source that gives you even, healthy growth. A sunny window is a perfectly reasonable experiment for a home grower. If you want repeatability, multiple trays or a shelf rack, controlled LED lighting becomes much more compelling.
