Buckwheat grows broad, tender cotyledons and can fill a tray quickly. It is a larger seed than brassicas and benefits from good hydration and close attention to hulls and moisture.
Use food-grade untreated seed
Choose seed intended for sprouting or microgreen production rather than chemically treated field seed.
Hydrate before sowing
A short soak can help larger buckwheat seed begin germination more uniformly. Drain it well before spreading it across the tray.
Sow in an even single layer
Avoid deep piles of seed. Good contact with the moist medium matters more than packing the maximum amount into the tray.
Use cover and moderate pressure
A clean upper tray can hold humidity and improve seed contact during early germination. Remove it once the crop is lifting strongly.
Give gentle light and airflow
Buckwheat leaves are broad and tender. Use even light and circulation without a strong fan aimed directly at the canopy.
Harvest before the crop becomes coarse
Cut cleanly above the media while stems and cotyledons are still tender. Inspect the canopy for loose hulls before packaging.
